Who this programme is for?
Pakeke with Mild Cognitive Impairment
Kaiāwhina living with and caring for Pakeke who have Dementia
The focus is on the Markers proven by research to have a beneficial effect on people dealing with Dementia, both the Pakeke and, as importantly, the Kaiāwhina.
NB: Sleep, diet, exercise, good hearing, smoking, drugs and alcohol are important factors for overall health and are addressed through general kōrero.
Programme
Needs to have a familiar/regular structure – people know what is happening and there are no surprises.
Create a safe, cosy and fun environment where Trust is built and Health Providers can come and work with individuals or the group when required.
“Kauawhitia a Mate Wareware” is a Community-led, Provider-supported programme.
Uses markers identified in research as beneficial for Whānau living with Dementia.

Programme Structure
- Whakatūwheratanga (Opening): Karakia, Mihi
- Whakawhanaungatanga
- Music and Singing
- Upper Body Mobility, Breathing, Poi,
- Stick Games
- Visiting Speakers
- Kapu Tī and Kai
- Split into Two Groups:
Pakeke – Cognitive Stimulation/Brain training/sharing
Kaiāwhina – Share Morning Tea, support each other, education around Managing
Dementia, Individual Support from Providers when necessary - Come together again for Notices, Next Hui, etc
- Whakamutunga (Closure): Karakia
